THE FACE PROGRAM

The FACE program  is an early intervention program for young people aged 10-15 who reside with a significant other who misuses alcohol or other drugs. It aims to stop the perpetuation of alcohol and other drug misuse in the family by providing young people with positive mentors, education, building self-esteem, protective behaviours, alternative recreational activities and life skill based activities.
The program has shown great initiative in raising community awareness of the broader issues around the safety and wellbeing of children and young people by also providing drug and alcohol information workshop sessions in schools.

NAPCAN is awarding 2013 Play Your Part Awards WA to Lisa Glover and Mission Australia for: their innovative approach and ongoing commitment to improving the outcomes for young people who reside with a significant other who misuses alcohol or drugs.

PRUE CLARKE OAM AND NARELLE HARGREAVES OAM JP
PROMOTING EFFECTIVE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT WITH ACT CHILDREN’S WEEK

NAPCAN Play Your Part Award Australian Capital Territory presented to: Prue Clarke OAM and Narelle Hargreaves OAM JP for promoting effective community engagement with ACT Children’s Week.

The Children’s Week (CW) Committee promotes the rights and abilities of children and young people through a wide range of  community events during National Children’s Week, held in October annually. The committee is coordinated and facilitated by dedicated, inspirational volunteers Narelle Hargreaves and Prue Clarke, who have both received Order of Australia Medals (OAM’s) in recognition of their commitment and dedication to children and young people.

NAPCAN is awarding 2013 Play Your Part Awards ACT to Narelle and Prue in recognition of: their inspiring leadership and dedication to the wellbeing and safety of children and young people. They have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to bringing together the community and the sector in innovative ways. They have been playing their part for years and are an example of how we can all take steps to put children at the centre of our local communities.

DESERT PEA MEDIA
INNOVATIVE USE OF MEDIA FOR YOUTH ENGAGEMENT

NAPCAN Play Your Part Award New South Wales presented to: Desert Pea Media for their innovative use of media for youth engagement.

Desert Pea Media is coordinated and directed by a network of families and friends based in Sydney and the regional centres of NSW. The programs run by Desert Pea Media aim to empower young people and create dialogue in the communities through storytelling, music, film and creating localised popular culture forms. This is to ensure young people are being heard. In the remote Indigenous community of Collarenebri NSW, they have delivered a long-term mentoring program with young people aged between 12-17 for over three years. The program has created ‘The Colli Crew’  – a hip-hop group who have produced seven songs and music videos around a range of issues such as cultural re-engagement, leadership, and social issues affecting young people in the local community.

NAPCAN  is awarding 2013 Play Your Part Awards NSW to Desert Pea Media for: the creative use of media to be the voices for indigenous children in a way that is fun and has seen many positive outcomes result, including increase in self esteem and school attendance rates in Collarenebri.

DREW BYNOE & THE COPS FOR KIDS COMMITTEE
INSPIRING LEADERSHIP IN PROMOTING THE WELLBEING OF CHILDREN

NAPCAN Play Your Part Award South Australia presented to: Drew Bynoe & the Cops for Kids Committee for showing inspiring leadership in promoting the wellbeing of children.

Cops For Kids (CFK) is a registered charity comprising of current and former South Australia Police (SAPOL) employees from both the metropolitan and regional areas. The aims of CFK are to raise funds for registered charities and foundations that are specifically child oriented or have a program to support or benefit children’s lives. CFK began as an idea in 2006 (by Drew) where members were given the opportunity to support specific charities via a payroll deduction scheme.

NAPCAN is awarding 2013 Play Your Part Awards SA to Drew Bynoe and the committee for: their commitment to improving the lives of children in the South Australian community. This is a great example of how an individual with an idea and the support of a few others – can make a difference.

GEORGINA BRACKEN AND FIONA HAMILTON – TENNANT CREEK WOMEN’S REFUGE
‘NO MORE NOW!’ PROGRAM

NAPCAN Play Your Part Award Northern Territory presented to: Georgina Bracken and Fiona Hamilton – Tennant Creek Women’s Refuge for the ‘No More Now!’ Program.

‘No More Now!’ is an educational program open to women in the Barkly Region of the Northern Territory. Tennant Creek Women’s Refuge provides services to all women and children who are victims of, or in fear of domestic or family violence. The program has seen a positive increase in children’s well being and awareness with evaluation surveys reporting an increase in knowledge around family violence and child safety issues for participants post activities. There was also a marked increase in knowledge of local services and where to get help.

NAPCAN is awarding 2013 Play Your Part Awards NT to Tennant Creek Womens Refuge for: developing a locally relevant program that the community has recognised as being valuable and useful.

BRAVEHEARTS INC.
‘DITTO’S KEEP SAFE ADVENTURE’ PERSONAL SAFETY PROGRAM

NAPCAN Play Your Part Award QLD presented to: Bravehearts Inc for ‘Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure’ Personal Safety Program.

The ‘Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure’ Personal Safety Program is designed for children aged 3-8 years, and has been running since 2006.  The program is a half hour live, interactive show created to educate students and raise awareness with the aim to prevent the incidence of sexual assault, schoolyard bullying and domestic violence.  The program is delivered through song and utilises easy to understand concepts. To date, almost 350,000 children have been participated in this program.

KERRYN MCGLONE AND MONIQUE ROSENBAUER FROM BENDIGO HEALTH
‘THE COMPLEX PREGNANCY CARE (CPC)’ PROGRAM

NAPCAN Play Your Part Award Victoria presented to: Kerryn McGlone and Monique Rosenbauer from Bendigo Health for ‘The Complex Pregnancy Care (CPC)’ Program. (Featured: Kerryn McGlone, Bendigo Health; Monique Rosenbauer, Bendigo Health; and Bernie Geary OAM, the Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People).

The CPC program commenced in October 2007 to offer more support to mothers and babies with complex needs. The program was developed when it was identified that opportunities existed throughout the pregnancy to develop strategies for these higher risk clients to be the recipients of a more structured identification and planning process to ensure complex social issues associated with pregnancy, childbirth and the care of newborn infants were recognised and effectively managed.

NAPCAN is awarding 2013 Play Your Part Awards Vic to Bendigo Health for: implementing and sustaining a prevention program where the focus is keeping children safe within their families.

NELL KUILENBURG – THE SALVATION ARMY
‘SAFE FROM THE START’ PROJECT

NAPCAN Play Your Part Award Tasmania presented to: Nell Kuilenburg – The Salvation Army, for ‘Safe from the Start’ project.

Safe from the Start is a national, evidence-based and early intervention project for working with children ages 0-6 that have experienced family and/or domestic violence. The project consists of a one-day training program that uses a specialised tool kit to provide a positive approach to engaging with children in ‘activity or therapeutic play’.

NAPCAN is awarding 2013 Play Your Part Awards Tas to The Salvation Army for: their ongoing commitment to the wellbeing and safety of children, through the development of this training program which utilises existing resources in an engaging way to respond to an identified local need.

ANGLICARE NT
PLAY AND LEARN SUPPORT (PALS) TRAINING AND MENTORING PROJECT

NAPCAN National Play Your Part Award presented to: Anglicare NT for Play and Learn Support (PALS) Training and Mentoring Project.

The PALS Resource was developed as part of the Anglicare NT East Arnhem Communities for Children Initiatives. This was in response to the local need for a resource to support caregivers to provide positive and developmentally appropriate learning experiences for children aged 0-3, with a specific focus on addressing developmental delays and supporting families and caregivers of children at risk of abuse and neglect. The kit facilitates rich discussions about critical periods of development and expected developmental milestones.

NAPCAN is awarding a 2013 National Play Your Part Award to PALS for: creating a resource that facilitates open discussions between parents and caregivers, ultimately creating a better understanding of child development and therefore better outcomes for children and young people.

LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCES FOUNDATION
SISTER2SISTER PROGRAM

NAPCAN National Play Your Part Award presented to: Life Changing Experiences Foundation for the SISTER2sister program.

The  SISTER2sister program, conducted by the Life Changing Experiences Foundation, is a unique 12-month mentoring & risk management program designed to empower “at risk” teenage girls to turn their lives around. Girls are matched with stable female role models (Big Sisters) who are professional business/corporate woman from the community. The Big Sisters provide support, guidance and inspiration throughout the program and beyond.

NAPCAN is awarding a 2013 National Play Your Part Award to SISTER2sister for: their ongoing commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable young women.

AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL POLICE
‘THINKUKNOW’ PROJECT

NAPCAN National Play Your Part Award presented to: Australian Federal Police for ‘ThinkUKnow’ project.

The ThinkUKnow program aims to raise awareness among parents, carers and teachers of how young people are using technology and how to keep them safe online and when using mobile technologies. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between parents and children and ensure caregivers are well aware of Internet safety issues.
ThinkUKnow sessions are hosted at primary and secondary schools across Australia, with over 600 schools participating to date and over 22,000 parents, carers and teachers educated.

NAPCAN is awarding a 2013 National Play Your Part Award to ThinkUKnow for: ongoing efforts to keep children and young people safe online; through their effective collaboration across sectors creating broad community awareness of issues concerning children’s safety and wellbeing.

TRESILLIAN FAMILY CARE CENTRES
THE PERIOD OF PURPLE CRYING PROGRAM

The Period of PURPLE Crying is an infant abuse prevention program which aims to reduce the incidence of babies suffering brain damage or even dying from the consequences of being shaken by carers. The period of PURPLE Crying is a new way to understand crying. The success of the initiative, which has been running in NSW since January 2010, lies in the collaborative partnership of Tresillian Family Care Centres NSW (coordinator), Rotary Club Campsie NSW (funding source) and NSW Canterbury Maternal and Child Health services including the midwives and community nurses who deliver the package and support the families to prevent child abuse and neglect.

NAPCAN is awarding a 2013 National Play Your Part Award to: The Period of PURPLE crying as an outstanding example of a communities working collaboratively to protect children.

BACKTRACK
INNOVATIVE AND INSPIRING YOUTH WORK

NAPCAN National Play Your Part Award presented to: BackTrack

Since 2006, Back Track’s mission is to offer young people aged 13-17 who have high rates of non school attendance, the opportunity to reconnect with their education and training, to become work ready, find jobs, lead happy and productive lives and participate fully in the community. Initially focussed on young men there is now a dedicated girls program too.
