NAPCAN’s media guides were officially launched on September 9 at Parliament House during an event hosted by the Australian Parliamentarians for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (APPCAN).
Developed in consultation with the NT Prevention Alliance, these guides provide essential guidance for journalists, editors, content creators, politicians, and educators on reporting about children and young people in a respectful and fair manner.
Both NAPCAN and the NT Prevention Alliance emphasise the vital role of the media in enhancing the wellbeing of all children and young people. The guides are designed to encourage responsible reporting that safeguards children’s safety and dignity while also amplifying young voices in media narratives that relate to their lives.
This initiative aims to ensure that media coverage does not harm children or compromise their rights, fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for their representation in Australian media.
The guides are available for download below. NAPCAN will be commencing a national campaign to roll out the media guides to industry and educational organisations in coming months.
