Cultivating Safe Spaces: Building Skills to Work with Young People

“We all need to not only be but also feel safe to reach our full potential, especially in environments where we are learning or interacting with others. This is particularly true for children and young people.  If you work with young people – particularly in groups – the Tuned In Modules are for you.” Associate Professor, Tim Moore (ACU).

Tuned in is a set of six self-contained online Modules designed for those working with young people in group settings. Each module covers essential evidence, knowledge, and techniques for ensuring safe and effective facilitation.
The objective is to equip adults with the knowledge and confidence to connect with, support and empower young people in safe and engaging group work.
Ultimately, you will be empowered to support child safe group work that will contribute to improved outcomes for young people and stronger safety networks around them.

What is covered?

The course consists of 6 modules covering:

  • Facilitating Child Safe Group Work with Young People
  • What makes a Child Safe Facilitator
  • Understanding Trauma and Facilitating Trauma Informed Groups
  • Creating Child Safe Spaces: Building Connections, Trust and Respect
  • Keeping it Together – Dealing with Challenging Behaviours and when things go wrong
  • Identifying and Responding to Young People’s Concerns

*Please allocate approximately 60 minutes to complete each module. Note that the completion times may vary among participants.

Who should complete the training?

The Tuned in Modules have been designed for any adult working or undertaking group work with young people, including but not limited to:

  • Adults delivering respectful relationships education, e.g. NAPCAN’s Love Bites facilitators who include people from a range of settings including police, health workers, youth workers, sexual health workers
  • Teachers and school staff
  • Recreational groups such as Scouts, Girl Guides, PCYC, and sporting clubs

The Modules are designed for all experience levels. While there may be some content you are familiar with, the most recent research informing the Modules will bring new information to your group work practice.
