Children do well when adults listen to them, value what they have to say, and respond in ways that help children feel valued, safe and supported.
NAPCAN has developed Safer Communities for Children as a resource for adults to help children learn about and share the things that can help them to feel safe and be safe. When parents, caregivers, community members and people working with children use these resources, we can learn more about how children think and feel, and about what they need from us to support their safety needs.
What is Safer Communities for Children?
Safer Communities for Children is a set of seven bush animal stories with games and activities that can help to build the confidence, help-seeking and coping strategies of children aged around 4-10 years. The stories include questions and activities that can support adults to connect with children and learn together about ways to help them feel and be safe. They also include reflection questions – ‘Something to think about’ – to help us, as adults, consider ways we can look out for children and keep them safe in our families, workplaces and communities.
Feel free to explore the resources on this page. We have flip books, story readings, and short clips about the kit.
If you are working with children and families, please click here to register for a free Safer Communities for Children workshop (Northern Territory) to learn more about how you can use the resources in your work with children, families and communities.
Safer Communities for Children has been developed in consultation with Northern Territory service providers and communities, and with funding from the Northern Territory Government. We thank you for your contributions and support.
Learn and talk about feelings with these energetic and animated animal faces. Use the cards to generate discussions with children about feelings and emotions, and to build relationships in fun and interactive ways.
NAPCAN acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters across Australia, on which this program will be held. We also pay our respects to their Elders both past and present. We acknowledge that the injustices of the past contribute to the suffering that continues to be felt in our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities today. NAPCAN values the cultural wisdom held by our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and is committed to listening and learning from them so that we are able to work in partnership to protect and nurture families and children.
