We are a team of 18 young people (aged 13-25) from all across Australia, standing together to make sure we and our peers are empowered, actively involved, and safe from harm, whether that’s from adults, friends, or partners. Spread out in every State and Territory, we work online and in person to ensure that our voices, priorities, and experiences are part of the conversation. Our goal? To make sure young people are safe, thriving, and involved in shaping the programs, policies, and decisions that impact us. By coming together with our diverse experiences, we advise on relevant work, submit policy ideas to the Government, and collaborate with communities and organisations to build a better future, both for us and for the next generations.
The Fair Youth Coverage Campaign is a national youth-led initiative driven by concerns raised by NAPCAN’s Youth Speak Out (NYSO), about how children and young people are represented in the media.
NYSO highlighted that harmful reporting can reinforce negative stereotypes, amplify trauma, and deter young people from seeking help.
In response, the campaign will: share 100 positive stories of young people from across Australia; Promote ethical reporting practices through NAPCAN’s National Media Guidelines; and launch a National Journalism Award to recognise excellence in reporting on children and young people.

The NYSO team has proudly represented NAPCAN at over 40 conferences, webinars, and events. Members have had the privilege of delivering keynote speeches, participating in panel discussions, and presenting on a wide range of topics, including amplifying young people’s voices, addressing key challenges they face, and promoting the safety and wellbeing of children and youth.

We work closely with NAPCAN to review, collaborate, and provide advice on various initiatives within the organisation, including the well-established Love Bites program, other NAPCAN programs, and Media and Message Guidelines. Additionally, we partner with key stakeholders and collaborators on research, programs, webinars, and literature to ensure the voices of children and young people are meaningfully included and heard in the decisions and work that impact them.
