DESCRIPTION:The Child Protection Forum & Expo is hosted by the Child Protection Team at John Hunter Children’s Hospital in Newcastle NSW.  This year’s forum will include an expo with representatives from a number of non-for-profit and non-government organisations\, including Australian Childhood Foundation and Child Abuse Prevention Service (CAPS).  Registrations are now open for this FREE event\, which you can attend either online or in person at John Hunter Hospital\, just scan the QR code to register. \nPROGRAM: \n8.00am      Registration and Expo Open \n8.45am      Acknowledgement of Country & Introduction \n9.00am      SESSION 1: BARRIERS TO REPORTING  \nThe majority of clinicians are acutely aware that when it comes to child protection\, they are a mandatory reporter\, so why don’t they report when they should?  This session discusses the common barriers to reporting and what you can do to overcome these individually and in your workplace. \n9.45am     SESSION 2: BEHIND THE SCENES  \nEver wondered exactly what happens after you make a helpline report? What does a day in the life of a child protection caseworker look like?  This session will examine the assessment process and pathways of helpline reports\, discuss how decisions on case allocations are made\, explore the role of a DCJ caseworker\, the limitations and difficulties of the role\, as well as relevant legal considerations. \n.… MORNING TEA …. \n11.15am              SESSION 3: ACTS OF OMISSION  \nNeglect is very rarely the primary and immediate cause of child fatality\, however neglect during childhood can have a devastating cumulative effect on a child or young person’s wellbeing.  This session will define neglect\, and discuss the identification and impact of neglect through a series of case studies. \n12.00pm             SESSION 4: IT ONLY TAKES ONE  \nThe powerful story of an individual who experienced significant trauma during childhood\, and the important adults who made a vital difference in their lived experience. \n12.30pm   SESSION 5: VICARIOUS TRAUMA \n“The expectation that we can be immersed in suffering and loss daily and not be touched by it is as unrealistic as expecting to be able to walk through water without getting wet.” Rachel Remen.  This session will provide an in-depth discussion of vicarious trauma and offer strategies for recognition and prevention. \n1.15pm      Questions and Close
