SUMMARY:Shifting the Paradigm: Boys and Mens disclosures of sexual trauma
DESCRIPTION:Shifting the Paradigm: Boys and Mens disclosures of sexual trauma \nThis webinar explores boys and mens disclosure of sexual trauma\, drawing on findings from a\nrecent systematic review examining barriers and facilitators that shape disclosure of sexual abuse\nand assaults among boys and men. Attendees will gain an overview of what is currently known\nabout disclosure and help-seeking in this population\, including key challenges that contribute\nto non-disclosure and long delays until disclosure\, as well as the factors that can motivate\nand facilitate disclosure. Barriers are presented across individual-level\, relational\, systemic/\ninstitutional\, and sociocultural domains\, shifting the focus away from individual responsibility\nand towards broader spheres of influence. This includes discussion of how tensions between\nvictimisation and traditional masculine norms can inhibit disclosure\, and current limitations in\nservice accessibility and practitioner education and support. Practical strategies for supporting\nboys and men to feel safe to disclose and seek support are offered\, alongside examples of tailored\nsupport services for boys and men who are victim-survivors. \nPresenter Vita Pilkington \nVita Pilkington (she/her) is a Research Fellow and PhD Candidate\nat the University of Melbourne and within Orygen’s Men’s Mental\nHealth department. Her current doctoral research examines boys’\nand men’s experiences of sexual trauma\, with a focus on disclosure\nand help-seeking. Her main research interests include trauma\, suicidality\,\nstigma\, and mental health service provision. She previously conducted\nresearch surrounding mental health in elite sportspeople\, also focusing\non mental health stigma and barriers to accessing care and support. \nWebinar Registration – Zoom \n
