SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Poverty & Keeping Children Safe
DESCRIPTION:NAPCAN in conversation with \n\nProfessor Brigid Featherstone\, UK\nProfessor Ilan Katz\, UNSW\nClaudia Lennon\, The Benevolent Society\n\nAs one of the wealthiest countries in the world\, it’s just not right that 1 in 6 of our children grow up in poverty. We know that poverty affects far too many Australian children and families\, diminishing their lives now and in the future. \nHow does poverty and inequality impact the context in which child abuse and neglect occurs and how it is responded to by different systems\, including those that are meant to be providing families with support? \nWhat can we learn from the UK and other countries\, to help every child in every community have a fair  go? \nBrid Featherstone is Professor of Social Work at the University of Huddersfield.  She was a member of the very influential Child Welfare Inequalities Project  (2015-2017) – this highlighted the association between poverty and children’s chances of coming into care and the lack of attention paid by child protection professionals to poverty as a risk factor for child maltreatment. \nProfessor Ilan Katz joined the Social Policy Research Centre\, UNSW Sydney in January 2005 following many years of policy\, practice and research in children and family services in the UK. His interests include parenting\, child protection\, youth justice\, prevention and family support\, children\, families and communities\, comparative child welfare systems\, migration\, race and ethnicity. \nClaudia Lennon\, Director of Practice and Impact Management\, Benevolent Society\, is a qualified social worker with over 20 year’s experience. She has worked for the health system\, not-for-profit and non-government agencies. She has 14 years of management experience across a variety of areas including family preservation\, youth homeless\, asylum seeker and refugees\, out-of-home care programs and cancer-specific youth programs. She also has experience working within the drug and alcohol field. Claudia has been with The Benevolent Society since 2013 where she began as the manager in the Resilient Families\, Social Benefit Bonds program and ongoing as the Bond moved to a payment by outcomes contract.

SUMMARY:Free Webinar: Keeping Children Safe from Poverty
DESCRIPTION:Keeping Children Safe from Poverty \nChildren can thrive and be healthy when they have what they need to develop well. To treat all of Australia’s children fairly\, we need to ensure every family has enough money to cover the basics and a secure roof over their heads. \nAccording to the latest data\, approximately 774\,000 children or 1 in 6 Australian children aged 0-14 years live in poverty. This figure is way too high for a wealthy country\, which was rated as having the highest levels of individual wealth in the world in 2021.  \nWhile income poverty creates deep disadvantage for children\, research finds that child poverty is multidimensional – impacting not only essential material goods\, but undermining children’s opportunities now and in the future\, and often undermining their relationships. \nFor instance\, kids growing up in poverty too often go to bed or school hungry; they can feel left out if they can’t afford to join a local sport team or go on school camps; they may be living in an overcrowded home where there’s no quiet place to do homework and they worry about their parents.  \nIn this webinar we’ll hear more about poverty from the perspective of children\, and how we can work together to keep children and families safe from poverty\, with:  \n\nProf Sharon Bessell from the Crawford School of Public Policy\, Australia National University\, who will share her fascinating research into child poverty (based largely on consultation with children and young people themselves)\nAngela Rondo from Thriving Families Nambour who will share her experience in supporting families at the local level\, including through the ‘Our community\, our families\, our children’ initiative which was recently recognised with a Queensland Child Protection Week Award. \n\nThis webinar has been organised as part of Anti-Poverty Week. Please visit the website at www.antipovertyweek.org.au to learn more about how you can support the campaign.  \nFor an introduction to the topic being covered in this webinar\, view the ANU’s short video Rethinking Child Poverty in Australia www.youtube.com/watch?v=oK6zCSbFK0c&t=21s

SUMMARY:Queensland National Child Protection Week Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Every child and young person deserves to learn about what respectful relationships look like for them: how do we make this happen?\nJoin us for the Queensland 2021 National Child Protection Week webinar\, “Every child and young person deserves to learn about what respectful relationships look like for them: how do we make this happen?” \nThe topics of respectful relationships education and consent have been widely discussed this year. SUMMARY:How can we ensure children and young people with disability receive a fair go?
DESCRIPTION:Children and young people with disability are more likely to experience abuse and are significantly overrepresented in the child protection system due to increased risk. This increased risk is not about the disability itself but rather is due to the things that children and young people with disability commonly experience like; having more reliance on others for care and support\, being socially isolated\, lacking a trusted adult or way to communicate with someone who can help\, or lacking the right support to fully participate in society. \nSo\, how do we build our communities so that children and young people with disability thrive? How can we empower children and young people with disability to exercise their rights and ensure their full participation and inclusion? How can we better listen to the voices of children and young people with disability? How do community attitudes towards children and young people with disability impact on safety and wellbeing? \nJoin us to hear from an exciting lineup of expert speakers who can lead us through the evidence and lived experiences of children and young people with disability and answer your questions. \nSpeakers:\nHelen Connolly\, South Australia’s Commissioner for Children and Young People\nMary Sayers\, CEO\, Children and Young People with Disability Australia (CYDA)\nProfessor Sally Robinson\, Professor in Disability and Community Inclusion\, Flinders University\nYoung person with a lived experience of disability (TBC)

SUMMARY:Proud in Culture\, Strong in Spirit
DESCRIPTION:Proud in Culture\, Strong in Spirit\nThis year’s theme for National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day was Proud in Culture\, Strong in Spirit. As with all Australian children\, it is important for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children to be able to maintain strong connections to their family\, community\, culture and Country. \nToo often though\, child protection systems seemingly lack the understanding of\, or deprioritise\, cultural connection. This can have negative consequences for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out-of-home care. \nThis webinar will explore how children thrive in systems that recognise the strengths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. \nTogether\, we can build a future where all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children have the opportunities to grow up safe in their families\, strong in their identities\, and connected to their cultures. \nThe discussion will include: \n\nWhat Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people telling us about culture\nWhat does a child’s connection to their culture and Country mean?\nHow does cultural connection support an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child’s wellbeing\, safety and identity?\nWhy Aboriginal community-controlled organisations are the most well-placed to ensure the best outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.\n\nSpeakers:\nApril Lawrie\, Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People SA\nCatherine Liddle\, CEO\, SNAICC\nBelinda Field\, Yerin Eleanor Duncan Aboriginal Health Services

SUMMARY:Creating Child Safe Organisations in the NT - Briefing for leaders\, management and board members
DESCRIPTION:Children’s Week is the perfect time to reflect on how our organisations can do more to keep children safely connected. \nAll children have the right to be safe and to feel safe all of the time. \nIn light of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse we know that it is critical to embed a child safe culture into every single organisation that has anything to do with children or young people\, either directly or indirectly. Leaders in organisations play a critical role in developing and maintaining a culture that values children and young people and is committed to treating their needs and their safety as the top priority. \nThis 1.5 hour session provides an overview of the 10 National Principles for Child Safe Organisations developed by the Australian Human Rights Commission. It includes steps that leaders can take to promote the safety\, engagement and wellbeing of children and young people and prevent harm within their organisation. Help children to thrive by embedding a child safe culture in your organisation.

SUMMARY:NT Acts of Kindness Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Being kind is good for our health\, good for those around us\, and especially good for our children.  \nAnd best of all\, it’s contagious! \nDuring National Child Protection Week 2020\, NAPCAN launched the NT Acts of Kindness Challenge to highlight the power of kindness as a tool for creating safe and nurturing environments for children. \nBetween now and Children’s Week we want to challenge adults and children to see how many acts of kindness we can record throughout the Territory. \nUse the activity sheet to talk about the power of kindness and record acts of kindness people do for you\, you do for someone else\, or that you hear about. You can also visit our NT Acts of Kindness webpage to record your acts of kindness and see kindness tips sent in to us by Territorians. \nLet’s create kindness in corridors\, clubs\, classes\, committees and communities – and spread a kindness epidemic across the NT! \n
