They are especially concerned at the high number of domestic violence related deaths that occur each year through homicide and suicide. SUMMARY:'Context' Matters: Understanding\, preventing and responding to sexual violence and abuse
DESCRIPTION:There is growing recognition\, and a developing evidence base\, supporting the contextual dynamics of sexual violence and abuse. Lessons learned from Australia’s Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse\, for example\, drew attention to contextual factors (organisational leadership\, policies and practice) that create conditions that might either increase risk\, or protect against\, sexual abuse. Multidisciplinary research evidence also shows how family\, peer\, school and neighbourhood settings may also contribute to abusive behaviour. Collectively\, this highlights the need to ensure prevention strategies\, as well as responses to sexual abuse\, are contextualised. \nThe Sexual Violence Research and Prevention Unit (SVRPU) will host a one-day symposium\, the first of its kind\, to bring together national and international experts to discuss the importance of context for preventing sexual violence and abuse and improving community safety. This symposium will be of interest to academics\, practitioners and policy professionals\, including police\, child safety\, youth justice\, corrections\, counselling services\, education\, law and health. \nClick here to register now!

DESCRIPTION:Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson (ABCSL) is a free livestreamed event that engages children across the country in vital personal safety education. In National Child Protection Week\, the Daniel Morcombe Foundation will livestream two brand new video safety lessons to children around the country. \nPreventing child sexual abuse is everybody’s responsibility. Teaching children that they have the right to be safe\, that they are allowed to say no to anything or anyone that makes them uncomfortable\, and that there are adults who will help them has the power to prevent harm. These messages also empower children who are experiencing abuse to tell someone who can help. \nIn fact\, help-seeking is the theme of Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson for both 4-7-year-olds and 8-12-year-olds this year. In these age-appropriate\, engaging\, and positive lessons\, children will learn skills and strategies to seek help if they ever feel unsafe. The lessons reframe accessing support as a truly heroic and courageous act. \nAustralia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson for early years and junior primary students (4-7 years old) will go live at 9am AEST on Tuesday 7 September (approx 10 mins long). SUMMARY:Child Protection Week in Playgroup
DESCRIPTION:We are hosting a family fun morning in our playgroup that promotes that children can thrive and be healthy when they have what they need to develop well.  \n We will provide child friendly play experiences\, engage a local Aboriginal artist to create with families\, a mural highlighting the Child Protection Week themes and aims. We will provide a healthy morning tea and each child will receive a literacy show bag which will contain information about child development\, local support services\, an age appropriate book and activities to provide resources for healthy home functioning. \n

SUMMARY:Man With A Pram - Toowoomba
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural Toowoomba Man With A Pram event is happening on Father’s Day\, Sunday 5/9/21 at Newtown Park at 930am with free coffee\, sausage sizzle and drinks. \nThis free event brings fathers\, families and friends together on Father’s Day for a walk and community event to combat isolation and bring community together. This year focuses on Perinatal mental health for fathers! We aim to bring forward state and national public dialogue through this event. We hope that the event will be a stage both this year and in the years to come to change the culture of fatherhood both from a community support perspective as well as a health and social service system perspective. There are currently 23 Man with a Pram events being held across the Nation on Father’s Day. \nOur Toowoomba Man with a Pram event is being run by Toowoomba Dads Group. Dads Group is a free support place for dads in the region. Toowoomba Dads Group has weekly catch-ups for dads and their kids\, we present regularly to the Toowoomba Base Hospital and St Vincent’s Hospital Antenatal classes and offer support for dads and their families when they need it. \nDads Group Nationally coordinates local Dads Groups and holds free daily Zoom sessions for dads. Dads Group is a non-judgemental support group for dads\, hoping to build family resilience through respectful and healthy relationships\,
