SUMMARY:Webinar: Let’s keep kids in the picture: family violence hurts children too
DESCRIPTION:Let’s keep kids in the picture: family violence hurts children too\n\nIn this discussion we will explore what the impacts of experiencing\, or being exposed to\, family and domestic violence means for children. \nWhile Australia has been having a deeper look at violence against women and shedding more light on what is needed to prevent it\, we need to make sure we keep kids in the picture. Children experience violence in the home differently to adults and these experiences can shape their future relationships and health outcomes. \nOur presenters will discuss how we keep prevention of harm to children a priority in the family and domestic violence space. \nPresenters: \n\nJess Hill\, Journalist\, Author and Advocate\nBiljana Milosevic\, Centre Director\, Jannawi Family Centre\nMoo Baulch\, Director Primary Prevention\, Women’s & Girls’ Emergency Centre (WAGEC) and Chair\, Our Watch

SUMMARY:Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson Livestream
DESCRIPTION:Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson (ABCSL) is an annual initiative of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation now in its seventh year. In a livestreamed online format\, ABCSL is an engaging\, educational video that teaches age-appropriate personal safety strategies in an empowering manner. ABCSL provides schools\, early learning services\, and families with the tools to engage in effective conversations about child safety. The Daniel Morcombe Foundation’s theme for 2023 is consent.  \nCommunicating about consent in a respectful way can help children assert their right to stay comfortable and enforce their right to stay safe. ABCSL will focus on the concepts of ‘my body\, my choice’\, and strategies children can then use when they need to seek\, give or deny consent (permission). \nThe early years and junior primary (ages 4-7) lesson will be livestreamed at 9am AEST and the upper primary (ages 8-12) will be livestreamed at 10am AEST. \nAustralia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson – The Daniel Morcombe Foundation

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:5th National Child Protection Forum  \nAmplifying the voices of children and young people to shape Australia’s child protection system  \n20-23 June 2023 | voco Brisbane City Centre  \nwww.childprotectionforum.co  \n200+ Attendees | 60+ Insightful Sessions | 40+ Speakers | 2+ Dedicated Streams  \n  \nThe number of children receiving child protection services in Australia has continued to rise over the last 5 years. Numerous inquiries have concluded that failures in child protection services’ timely responses are due to many factors such as\, demand at the front end of child protection services\, families receiving too little too late in the form of intervention and a rising population of children in care coupled with lack of suitable placements.   \nThere are too many children that are not growing up safe and supported due to the child protection systems being overloaded. There are many opportunities to change the trajectory for these vulnerable children.   \nThird Sector’s 6th National Child Protection Forum 2023 will focus on supporting and empowering children to have a voice in the delivery of services. This forum will accelerate the implementation of existing commitments made to children and advocate discussion between government\, community services\, legal and justice systems to provide strong policy and implementation of service delivery on protecting Australia’s children.  \nAttend this forum and learn how to:  \n\nEmpower children and young people to collaborate and deliver services \nDemonstrate the benefits of collective action in achieving clear positive outcomes for children  \nDevelop a strategy to accelerate the implementation of existing commitments related to children   \nSupport children and young people that have experienced trauma  \nImprove the cultural competency within child protection bodies to better engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

SUMMARY:Children's Week 22 - 30 October 2022
DESCRIPTION:Children’s Week is a national celebration of children’s rights\, talents and citizenship held on the fourth Wednesday of October in Australia to coincide with Universal Children’s Day.  Each year the theme of Children’s Week highlights a particular Children’s Right. \nThe Children’s Week National Theme for 2022 is based on UNCRC Article 27. \nChildren have the right to a standard of living that is good enough to meet their physical and mental needs. The government should help families who cannot afford to provide this. \nChildren’s Week is run by different organisations in each state and territory and many of these have their own websites. To link to information about Children’s Week in your state or territory go to the National Children’s Week website.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Poverty & Keeping Children Safe
DESCRIPTION:NAPCAN in conversation with \n\nProfessor Brigid Featherstone\, UK\nProfessor Ilan Katz\, UNSW\nClaudia Lennon\, The Benevolent Society\n\nAs one of the wealthiest countries in the world\, it’s just not right that 1 in 6 of our children grow up in poverty. We know that poverty affects far too many Australian children and families\, diminishing their lives now and in the future. \nHow does poverty and inequality impact the context in which child abuse and neglect occurs and how it is responded to by different systems\, including those that are meant to be providing families with support? \nWhat can we learn from the UK and other countries\, to help every child in every community have a fair  go? \nBrid Featherstone is Professor of Social Work at the University of Huddersfield.  She was a member of the very influential Child Welfare Inequalities Project  (2015-2017) – this highlighted the association between poverty and children’s chances of coming into care and the lack of attention paid by child protection professionals to poverty as a risk factor for child maltreatment. \nProfessor Ilan Katz joined the Social Policy Research Centre\, UNSW Sydney in January 2005 following many years of policy\, practice and research in children and family services in the UK. His interests include parenting\, child protection\, youth justice\, prevention and family support\, children\, families and communities\, comparative child welfare systems\, migration\, race and ethnicity. \nClaudia Lennon\, Director of Practice and Impact Management\, Benevolent Society\, is a qualified social worker with over 20 year’s experience. She has worked for the health system\, not-for-profit and non-government agencies. She has 14 years of management experience across a variety of areas including family preservation\, youth homeless\, asylum seeker and refugees\, out-of-home care programs and cancer-specific youth programs. She also has experience working within the drug and alcohol field. Claudia has been with The Benevolent Society since 2013 where she began as the manager in the Resilient Families\, Social Benefit Bonds program and ongoing as the Bond moved to a payment by outcomes contract.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Creating a ‘one-stop shop’ for the needs of families: Co-design\, evaluation & sustaining change
DESCRIPTION:Creating a ‘one-stop shop’ for the needs of families: Co-design\, evaluation & sustaining change\n\nChildren thrive when families get the support they need\, when they need it. \nBut when families – especially those with complex needs – have to travel all over town in search of the right services\, they are unlikely to get the support they need. \nWith around 100 child/family hubs across Australia\, many of us will be familiar with the model of co-locating health (medical & allied health) and social services (eg housing\, domestic and family violence\, addiction\, financial and parenting advice). However\, until now there has been limited research and evaluation about how best to design and create hubs to meet the needs of families. \nIn this webinar\, experts from the National Child and Family Hub Network\, will share learnings from their co-design process\, evaluation\, and evidence\, including: \n\nWhat families are telling us they need\nWhat are the core elements of the ideal hub\nHow ‘social prescribing’ needs to sit alongside medical prescribing\nHow existing hubs and health centres can start to shift towards a more integrated model\n\nWe’ll be hearing from those leading this work at Murdoch Children’s Research Institute: \n\nProfessor Harriet Hiscock\, Associate Director of Research at the Centre for Community Child Health\nDr Suzy Honisett\, Postdoctoral Research Officer\nDr Tess Hall\, Postdoctoral Fellow

SUMMARY:Webinar: Supporting young parents with an out-of-home care experience
DESCRIPTION:Supporting young parents with an out-of-home care experience\nIn partnership with the Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS)\nMany young people with experience of out-of-home care (OOHC) have complex histories of trauma and neglect and generally poorer health\, education and employment outcomes than their peers. They are also more likely to become parents at a young age and to have their children enter the child protection system or be taken into care. Evidence suggests that trauma-informed and therapeutic models of support can lead to better outcomes. This webinar will interest practitioners working in the child\, family welfare sector who support young parents with experience of OOHC. \nPresenters: \n\nJade Purtell\, Manager\, Peer worker models for transitions from care. Monash University.\n\nKylie Bolland\, Team Leader at Caboolture Young Mothers for Young Women\nNaima Ali\, CREATE young consultant with an experience in out-of-home care.\n\n\n\nFacilitated by Stewart Muir\, Executive Manager of the Child & Family Evidence research program at the Australian Institute of Family Studies

SUMMARY:Children's Art Activity
DESCRIPTION:This year in Child Protection Week (4 – 10 September) we will be talking about the need to treat all of Australia’s children fairly\, by making sure that every neighbourhood has what kids need to thrive and be healthy. \nWe’re looking for artworks to show what children and young people think about their neighbourhoods. These will then be used in our campaign (leading up to September) to help show that protecting children is about working together as a community. \nThis way we hope to see artworks that are based on meaningful conversations with the children and young people themselves. \nVisit the website to find out more.
