SUMMARY:Shifting the Paradigm Webinar Series: Motivations of perpetrators of child sexual abuse
DESCRIPTION:Four decades ago\, seminal child sexual abuse scholar Finkelhor (1984) claimed that “[t]here\nis nothing in the field of child sexual abuse more perplexing than the question\, ‘Why would\nsomeone molest a child’?” (p. 33). This comment retains its resonance forty years later. This\npresentation will address this question by providing an overview of the motivations of child\nsexual abuse (CSA) perpetrators. After establishing the differences between causes of CSA\nperpetration and motivations\, it will canvas the existing evidence base\, with a focus on how\nperpetrators themselves understand their own behaviour. This presentation will be of particular\nrelevance to those who work with sexual offenders in treatment and/or correctional capacities. \nPresenter/Dr Kelly Richards\, Professor of criminology\nin the School of Justice at Queensland University of\nTechnology. \nDr Kelly Richards is Professor of criminology in the School of Justice at\nQueensland University of Technology. She holds a PhD from Western\nSydney University and is an accomplished criminological researcher\,\nhaving previously held a senior research position at the Australian Institute\nof Criminology. Kelly’s research focuses on better understanding and responding to\nboth victim/survivors and perpetrators of sexual violence. She has led numerous funded\nresearch grants and published widely on this and other related topics. In 2010 she was\nawarded the ACT Government Office for Women Audrey Fagan Churchill Fellowship\,\nand in 2020 she was named a Senior Fulbright Scholar. She is currently an Australian\nResearch Council Future Fellow researching child sexual abuse perpetrator motivations. \nLink: Webinar Registration – Zoom  \n

SUMMARY:Shifting the Paradigm: Boys and Mens disclosures of sexual trauma
DESCRIPTION:Shifting the Paradigm: Boys and Mens disclosures of sexual trauma \nThis webinar explores boys and mens disclosure of sexual trauma\, drawing on findings from a\nrecent systematic review examining barriers and facilitators that shape disclosure of sexual abuse\nand assaults among boys and men. Attendees will gain an overview of what is currently known\nabout disclosure and help-seeking in this population\, including key challenges that contribute\nto non-disclosure and long delays until disclosure\, as well as the factors that can motivate\nand facilitate disclosure. Barriers are presented across individual-level\, relational\, systemic/\ninstitutional\, and sociocultural domains\, shifting the focus away from individual responsibility\nand towards broader spheres of influence. This includes discussion of how tensions between\nvictimisation and traditional masculine norms can inhibit disclosure\, and current limitations in\nservice accessibility and practitioner education and support. Practical strategies for supporting\nboys and men to feel safe to disclose and seek support are offered\, alongside examples of tailored\nsupport services for boys and men who are victim-survivors. \nPresenter Vita Pilkington \nVita Pilkington (she/her) is a Research Fellow and PhD Candidate\nat the University of Melbourne and within Orygen’s Men’s Mental\nHealth department. Her current doctoral research examines boys’\nand men’s experiences of sexual trauma\, with a focus on disclosure\nand help-seeking. Her main research interests include trauma\, suicidality\,\nstigma\, and mental health service provision. She previously conducted\nresearch surrounding mental health in elite sportspeople\, also focusing\non mental health stigma and barriers to accessing care and support. \nWebinar Registration – Zoom \n

SUMMARY:National Children's Week Oration - Tim Gill (UK)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 26th October 2023 \n9:15 am – 10:30 am AEST \nWe know that children who get the chance to play out of doors grow up healthier and happier. Yet in Australia and around the world\, the horizons of childhood are shrinking. Children are spending more and more time indoors and in front of screens. And adults are becoming ever more anxious about children’s safety and well-being. What is more\, adult anxieties can end up harming children’s learning and development\, fuelling unnecessary fears and undermining trust and confidence in ourselves and our children. \nHow can parents\, educators\, campaigners and decision makers build the case for outdoor play\, and for a balanced\, thoughtful approach to risk? Based on his influential books No Fear: Growing up in a risk averse society and Urban Playground: child-friendly planning and design can save cities\, Tim Gill will make the case for expanding children’s horizons\, starting in their own homes\, schools\, children’s services settings and neighbourhoods. \nTim’s presentation will be followed by a panel of Australian leaders and audience reflection and discussion on what action we need to take to create a case for play and where does play fit in the National Wellbeing Agenda?

SUMMARY:ACMS Pathways to Positive Change Webinar
DESCRIPTION:In April this year\, a landmark Australian study was published\, the Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS). The study aimed to identify\, for the first time\, the extent of child abuse in the Australian population. The results were sobering\, with the findings underscoring the moral and economic imperative for Australia to develop and deliver a coordinated long-term plan for generational reform. Professor Daryl Higgins\, Director of the ACU Institute of Child Protection Studies and ACMS research team member and Rani Kumar\, Deputy CEO of NAPCAN are joining us for a webinar on 27 September to discuss the findings and preventative actions that can be taken. Register for the webinar here.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Let’s get our words right: how to craft messages that drive child abuse prevention
DESCRIPTION:Let’s get our words right: how to craft messages that drive child abuse prevention\n\nTo prevent child abuse and neglect\, we need to get our messaging right. \nWe need everyone in the community – especially decision-makers – to understand the rates of abuse\, the impacts\, and what needs to be done. \nNaturally\, it’s tempting to lead with the shocking statistics. However\, evidence shows that this can backfire by triggering feelings of fatalism and overwhelm. \nIn this webinar we’ll learn how just a few simple changes to our words and their order can make a huge difference\, and help to shift thinking: \n\nFrom fatalism to agency (‘child abuse is preventable’)\nFrom ‘them/othering’ to ‘us’ (‘child abuse impacts the whole community’)\nFrom individualism to collectivism (‘the solutions lie in whole-of-community action’)\n\nThanks to the Australian Child Maltreatment Study\, we have strong evidence. \nLet’s find out how we can best use this evidence to build support for prevention. \nPresenters: \n\nNat Kendall-Taylor\, CEO FrameWorks Institute US\nAnnette Michaux\, Parenting Research Centre & FrameWorks Institute

SUMMARY:Webinar: Preventing emotional abuse of children: The role of parenting support
DESCRIPTION:Preventing emotional abuse of children: The role of parenting support\nIn partnership with the Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) \nThis webinar will explore emotional abuse in childhood and the role of parenting support in reducing and preventing child maltreatment. \nDespite its high prevalence\, emotional abuse is less well-known than other forms of child maltreatment\, including physical or sexual abuse. \nRecently\, the Australian Child Maltreatment Study found that in young people aged 16-24 years\, about 35% had previously experienced emotional abuse\, with the rate 1.5 times higher among girls than boys. The study also found that 40% of young women experienced emotional abuse before age 18. Furthermore\, individuals who experienced emotional abuse in childhood were 2.3 times more likely to have attempted suicide in the past 12 months\, 2.1 times more likely to have self-harmed and were 1.8 times more likely to be cannabis dependent\, even after accounting for other experiences of maltreatment. \nDespite being traumatising and contributing to a range of physical\, social and psychological problems\, experiences of emotional abuse are often minimised and overlooked in service settings. \nEmotional abuse occurs at the hands of parents and primary caregivers and can overlap with other unhelpful forms of parenting. This makes the family environment key for the prevention of emotional abuse in childhood. Parenting programs have been shown to reduce risk factors and enhance protective factors associated with child maltreatment. \nPresenters: \n\nDr Divna Haslam\, Senior Research Fellow and Clinical Psychologist\, Queensland University of Technology\nAssociate Professor Alina Morawska\, Director Parenting and Family Support Centre\, University of Queensland

SUMMARY:Webinar: Let’s keep kids in the picture: family violence hurts children too
DESCRIPTION:Let’s keep kids in the picture: family violence hurts children too\n\nIn this discussion we will explore what the impacts of experiencing\, or being exposed to\, family and domestic violence means for children. \nWhile Australia has been having a deeper look at violence against women and shedding more light on what is needed to prevent it\, we need to make sure we keep kids in the picture. Children experience violence in the home differently to adults and these experiences can shape their future relationships and health outcomes. \nOur presenters will discuss how we keep prevention of harm to children a priority in the family and domestic violence space. \nPresenters: \n\nJess Hill\, Journalist\, Author and Advocate\nBiljana Milosevic\, Centre Director\, Jannawi Family Centre\nMoo Baulch\, Director Primary Prevention\, Women’s & Girls’ Emergency Centre (WAGEC) and Chair\, Our Watch

SUMMARY:Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson Livestream
DESCRIPTION:Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson (ABCSL) is an annual initiative of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation now in its seventh year. In a livestreamed online format\, ABCSL is an engaging\, educational video that teaches age-appropriate personal safety strategies in an empowering manner. ABCSL provides schools\, early learning services\, and families with the tools to engage in effective conversations about child safety. The Daniel Morcombe Foundation’s theme for 2023 is consent.  \nCommunicating about consent in a respectful way can help children assert their right to stay comfortable and enforce their right to stay safe. ABCSL will focus on the concepts of ‘my body\, my choice’\, and strategies children can then use when they need to seek\, give or deny consent (permission). \nThe early years and junior primary (ages 4-7) lesson will be livestreamed at 9am AEST and the upper primary (ages 8-12) will be livestreamed at 10am AEST. \nAustralia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson – The Daniel Morcombe Foundation

DESCRIPTION:Children’s Week is a national celebration of children’s rights\, talents and citizenship held on the fourth Wednesday of October in Australia to coincide with Universal Children’s Day.  Each year the theme of Children’s Week highlights a particular Children’s Right. \nThe Children’s Week National Theme for 2022 is based on UNCRC Article 27. \nChildren have the right to a standard of living that is good enough to meet their physical and mental needs. The government should help families who cannot afford to provide this. \nChildren’s Week is run by different organisations in each state and territory and many of these have their own websites. To link to information about Children’s Week in your state or territory go to the National Children’s Week website.
