Art Activity - National Child Protection Week 2023

NAPCAN > Art Activity – National Child Protection Week 2023

This year in Child Protection Week (3 – 9 September) we will be talking about the need to give every child in every community a fair go.

We’re looking for artworks to show what children and young people think about their relationships with family, friends and community.

These will then be used in our campaign (leading up to September) to help show that protecting children is about all of us working together.

What we need:

  • Investment in time (probably a few hours) talking to the children about their families, friends, homes and places they feel safe and connected. And then using these conversations as inspiration to create artworks that are based on meaningful conversations.
  • We would love to see collaborative artworks but we are also happy for children to do individual artworks if they prefer.
  • Permission to display your beautiful artworks on our website and on social media. (This is part of the submission process).

Here are some talking points to get you started…

You know your children best, so please feel free to guide your own conversations.

You may like to start by telling the children: ‘We want to learn more about what things and people YOU think are most important in making you feel happy, connected and safe in your life.’

Explain that it’s not just up to mums and dads to make sure you grow up healthy and well; it’s also up to the whole community to make sure that every family has the things they need.

As an example you could talk about the sorts of things that help build connections in communities like:

  • friendly neighbours and people who make time for each other
  • having fun things to do like local parks with playgrounds or libraries
  • having the things you need easy to get to like schools, jobs and doctors.

We’d like to get children and young people thinking about all aspects of their families and communities and what is important for them…

The following questions might be useful:

  • What are the things that help you feel like you belong in your neighbourhood?
  • What are the things that make you feel close to your friends?
  • Who else is special to you in your life?
  • How do you feel when you walk around the streets where you live? What do you like best about it?
  • What are things that help you feel better when things don’t work out the way you’d like them to?

Depending on your group, you may like to get the children thinking a bit more deeply about fairness e.g. Do you think that all children have all the things that they need to grow up feeling happy, connected and safe? If NO – how do we make things more fair?

DETAILS:

Draw or paint your artwork on A3 paper or larger.
