Child Friendly Australia
Tools and Resources
Over the last 18 years NAPCAN has distributed in excess of 20 million high quality, culturally appropriate behavioural change tools. These wellbeing and prevention tools have been highly valued by the millions of Australians who have used them:
  • professionals working with families,
  • parents and carers, and
  • children themselves

Behavioural Change Tools
These brochures are an integral part of all NAPCAN programs and projects, and have been in various forms, the most popular being our brochures. More than 60 parenting topics have been produced. Some have been produced in five culturally diverse languages. Like any behaviour changing tool, NAPCAN’s Tools are most effective when they are used with complementary interventions. A series of Aboriginal Story Books and Story Posters highlighting community and family responsibility for children formed part of a national tour. These Story Books and Posters won an Australian Council for Children and Parenting award.

Our latest brochure: The Importance of Play
During NCPW 06 NAPCAN released its latest Parenting resource: The Importance of Play, as part of the Promotions Pack, distributed to NCPW event and activity organisers. This wonderful new resource clearly demonstrates that play is an essential component of every child's development. The brochure is designed to make play appealing to readers, and especially parents and child carers. It highlights the need for children and parents to have fun together, and encourages parents to provide time out, playmates and a safe environment to facilitate quality playtime with their children.

This new resource, which replaces an earlier brochure: 'The Importance of Play in a Child's Development,' is the result of a partnership between NAPCAN and Playgroup Australia HERE
The content was resourced by early childhood experts, and has been developed around NAPCAN's core values:  respect, collaboration, communication, integrity and courage.

Tools Plus - 'Teachable Moments'
NAPCAN’s Wellbeing and Prevention Tools are now developed to apply the findings of the 2004 Parenting Information Project for a community audience MORE Specifically this repositioning, designed to increase the likelihood of positive community relations with children, will entail:

  • Positioning the Tools to influence action and behaviour with children;
  • Use the Tools, and apply their information content, at the best moment, a ‘teachable moment’;
  • Use the Tools as part of a broader intervention – particularly a relationship – at the ‘teachable moment’

An independent evaluation for the Australian Government in 2000 confirmed that these Tools can be a valuable catalyst for behaviour change benefiting children. The Friends of NAPCAN Survey undertaken in 2004 identified that 1 in 5 users of the Tools apply them on a weekly or daily basis. The Tools are rated very highly by users for their quality, presentation, cultural appropriateness, and simplicity.
