focuses on sexual assault and family violence. The Program is based on best practice standards for education programs as recommended by the Australian Domestic and Family Violence Clearing House. The program has been internally evaluated from its inception and has evolved to best meet the needs of its target group.
More than 9000 high school students have participated in this anti-sexual violence program aimed at Year 9 & 10 students. This innovative program uses popular art and music to dispel myths and engage young people in breaking the cycle of sexual violence. Over 450 service providers and teachers have already been trained to facilitate the program, and LOVE BiTES training is now being rolled out across NSW, Qld and NT.
This NAPCAN initiative has received significant funding from the NSW Government, and will see a positive interagency approach to educating young people on respectful relationships.
consists of two interactive workshops on sexual assault and family/ domestic violence and then two/three workshops that consolidate the information from the morning workshops by working alongside the students to write, perform and record a hip hop song, write, and perform a drama piece and develop posters/resources around the issues of sexual assault and family violence for their community. The program recognises the skills, talents and knowledge of the students and models respectful relationships between male and female students, teachers and workers.
Six students from Port Macquarie High School, supported by Angela Walsh and their drama teacher Hamish Keddie, spent a morning recently working with Cameron Marshall from ABC Local radio Port Macquarie to develop five advertisements for the local mid north coast community. ABC Port Macquarie has received great feedback from their local community and have shared them with ABC local radio stations across NSW. Click on a link to listen
The program then feeds into local community campaigns. The program is directly integrated into Domestic and Family Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention campaigns in local communities that run each year including the 16 days of Activism to Stop Violence Against Women, White Ribbon Day and Reclaim the Night.
All local high schools who have participated in contribute to these Community campaigns. Students vote for the best posters and songs developed from their workshops. These posters are them used to develop the campaigns poster, t-shirts and coasters. Male and Female students promote their campaigns through the local media – television and local newspapers.
has been developed to meet the training needs of domestic violence and sexual assault service providers across the country. The train the trainer program was trialled in an Indigenous Community - Walgett, NSW and a CALD Community -Lakemba NSW. Both trials were extremely successful with positive outcomes for Community service providers and students.
