"I wanted to do my internship with NAPCAN because their approach to dealing with child abuse and neglect really interested me. It is all about preventing abuse before it starts, and I wanted to learn more about how they worked with such prevention.
My time with NAPCAN has given me many new ideas – especially about how projects can be run and how effective they can be. I know my experience here will benefit my future social work in Sweden."

"I enjoy working with children because they are the brightness of our day, they bring joy into life because they are our future. To protect them, care for them and support them is our responsibility. To see their faces light up, and hear laughter that echos throughout a room, and experience the warmth of a loving hug, recollect the memories of myself once a child." Ethel completed a Bachelor of Social Work at University Western Sydney, and as part of her studies completed an internship with NAPCAN. She chose NAPCAN for her internship as she wanted to find an organisation that works towards the protection of children- the reason she was inspired to become a social worker. Ethel volunteered with NAPCAN three days a week during August 2005. She assisted with the planning and implementation of National Child Protection Week including:
- implementing an NCPW outdoor weather broadcast with Channel 7;
- assisting with workshops;
- assisting and contributing to forum discussions;
- briefly assisting in the competition entitled "visions of a child friendly community";
- assisting with the compilation of promotional kits.
Ethel's major project involved researching and proposing options that NAPCAN can undertake to involve the ideas and opinions of young people and children. This has involved consulting similar organisations including INSPIRE foundation, Student Representative Council and NSW Commissioner for young people and children. She also planned and led focus groups with 40-50 young people and children, across Sydney, to research their ideas and opinions.
Ethel says: "Having had the opportunity to be a part of the NAPCAN family has really opened my eyes to the real issues of child protection within Australia and to see how the smallest efforts can make a huge difference within our communities.It has been a privilege to have worked within the heart of an organization that strives to educate and support communities towards the protection of children. Before I began my internship I had no idea how much of an issue it was to protect children. My experiences with NAPCAN, though brief, have been immensely empowering for me as I work towards becoming a social worker, and it has brought me hope that it is possible to make a difference in this world." |
