... is part of the 2006-7 strategy to find out from children and young people their visions for a child friendly Australia. Some key elements of the Ask KiDS campaign became part of National Child Protection Week '06.
The NCPW Invitation to participate was designed around the campaign, inviting adults to 'Ask KiDS' for their thoughts about child friendly communities. Avant Card joined the campaign and presented a fresh look to the challenge. A card was designed with a child's face and an empty 'bubble' providing space for a child's response to the question 'Ask kids what they really need?'
- 40,000 Avant Cards were produced and released on Wed 2nd August '06.
[21,007 cards were produced in 2005]
- Avant Cards were placed in urban venues across Australia ; the majority [16,705] in premium cafes and restaurants
- Using a free reply post people continue to send back to us cards with the bubble filled in with what KiDS have said

The Ask KiDS advertisement was also reproduced in half and quarter page newspaper advertisements, which were sent out to local newspapers for publication by the media desk. It was also reproduced as a downloadable document linked from the NCPW main page. Several schools took up the challenge as a NCPW activity. Community Action Networks and Community Neighbourhood Centres ran art competitions, based on the campaign, inviting kids to paint/draw their image of a child friendly community.
To this date we have received 125 Avant Cards back, [with 1,220 words] from the children themselves. Responses from schools accounted for a further 137 replies, newspapers 42, and art competitions involved about 750 children and young people. This totals 1,054 children and young people. This is a conservative measurement of the outcomes and involvement as anecdotally we know many more children were involved in each art competition or Ask Kids response. What the Avant Card answers tell us:
They can be categorised into 5 basic categories:
- Basic Needs [Healthy Food, Sleep/Bed, blankets, Air & water, warm clothes, exercise, breakfast, No worries, place to live]
- Safety [Wellbeing, world peace, doctors care, don't abuse us or family, knowledge on how to defend and protect ourselves, no graffiti or smashed windows, safe & secure, no one to hurt or steal from me, safe from all scary creatures]
- Family [Loving mother & father, spend time, attention, seen & heard, hugs & kisses, smiles, siblings to play with, home]
- Love [Care, hugs, happiness, smiles, hope, unconditional love, Being told you are loved, TLC, no angry words]
- Education [Books, toy library, school, learn things, jobs, role models, safety knowledge] every response stated a need to be loved and have a loving family.
All responses can be read on the Child Friendly Australia website.MORE
