Australia's lead child abuse prevention organisation, the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN), is calling on every Australian to play a part in a radical new approach to preventing and reducing child abuse and neglect in the light of the latest horrifying national statistics.

"We need to create Child Friendly Towns, Cities and Suburbs right across Australia in the way we have successfully created Tidy Towns" says Adam Blakester, Executive Officer of NAPCAN. "We need to establish Community Action Networks in every town, city and suburb to build the capacity of communities to support families, and the capacity of families to raise children. The fact that this is the seventh year running that every national indicator of child abuse and neglect has worsened shows what we are doing is not good enough". MORE

Breaking the Cycle of Child Abuse: Real Responsibility for the Safety of Indigenous and all Australian Children

Reacting to horrific cases of child abuse that have already occurred in Indigenous communities alone can not, and will not, break the cycle of child abuse. Adam Blakester, Executive Officer of Australia's lead national child abuse prevention agency, NAPCAN Foundation, says "The appropriate and urgent response required today needs to address the underlying root causes of child abuse, or else the cycle of abuse will only continue. This would form the basis of a National Child Abuse Prevention Strategy, targeting all Australian children." MORE

Australia's National Shame - Child Abuse Dramatically Worsens Again (18th January 2006)
The number of Australian children suffering abuse continues to dramatically worsen according to the Child Protection Australia 2004-05 Report, released today by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).
